Australia: American Express launches a new platinum card in Australia

For the first time in Australia, cardholders can now apply for a platinum credit card with a metallic design. Previously, cardholders were only entitled to a metal card from Amex in Australia if they were invited to use the Amex Centurion black card.

This new card comes with an added variety of features. The American Express Platinum card has always offered complimentary international insurance, however with the new card, this extends up to 4 additional card members alongside partners and dependent children travelling alongside the cardholder.

This could potentially drive uptake of the Amex Platinum card, as according to RFi Group data, about 2 in 5 cardholders who receive overseas travel insurance on their card were encouraged to take out the card due to this insurance cover.

Platinum and Platinum business cardholders are also given unlimited access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection which includes the Amex lounges in Sydney and Melbourne international airports as well as Centurion Lounges in Hong Kong and Las Vegas.

This benefit is extended to primary and additional cardholders, as well as allowing cardholders to bring along 2 guests per visit. The Amex Express Platinum Travel credit has also been increased from $300 to $450 with cardholders also being entitled to a complimentary Accor Plus Membership.

For Amex Platinum Business cardholders this goes a step further as they will also receive a complimentary night’s accommodation each year and added Hotel Elite tier status, including the Hilton Honors Gold Status.

All Amex Platinum cardholders will now also receive an annual subscription to the Australian Financial Review. These benefits alone are valued at $1,400 combined according to Amex.

However, these perks do come at a price. The American Express Platinum card charges a $1,450 per annum fee (increased from the previous $1,200 p.a) and the Platinum Business card charges a $1,750 per annum fee (increased from the previous $1,500 p.a).
